Why an exercise scientist says creatine is for your brain first, and your biceps a distant second.
Dr Krissy Kendall researches how muscle and brain make energy. Creatine is the most studied supplement in her field, and she reckons most blokes are using it for the least interesting thing it does. Six things she wants you to know before your next scoop.

Your brain burns the same fuel your muscles do.
Creatine recycles ATP, the energy your cells spend every second. Muscle spends it to lift. Your brain spends it to think, and it spends a lot. When stores are low, both run a little short, and the first place you notice is not the squat rack. It is the 3pm fog at your desk and the short fuse when you get home.
“The brain runs on the same energy currency as muscle. Creatine supplementation has been shown to sharpen attention and processing speed, with even stronger effects when the brain is under stress, like sleep deprivation.”

You are probably running lower than you think.
Your body makes about a gram of creatine a day and picks up a little more from steak and fish. Unless you are eating red meat at every meal, that leaves you short of full stores, and every hard session, late night and long work week draws them down further. Topping up is not adding something foreign. It is filling a tank that was never full.

Forget the loading phase. Forget cycling off.
The commonly researched dose is 3 to 5 grams of creatine monohydrate a day. Take it daily and stores saturate in about four weeks, no 20g loading week, no bloating, no need to cycle off. It works the same whether your hardest effort is a heavy pull day, a Saturday game, a 5am surf or a 12-hour shift on site.

A scoop stirred into water is fighting physics.
Creatine does not drift into muscle on its own. It is carried across the cell membrane by a transporter that runs on sodium and chloride. Chuck a scoop in plain water and you are asking it to get in without a key. Take it with the electrolytes it rides on and you are working with your body instead of against it, and replacing what you sweat out at the same time.
“Electrolytes aren't just along for the ride: sodium and chloride are required to transport creatine across the cell membrane, so pairing them with creatine can mean better uptake into muscle, not just better hydration.”

Most 'creatine drinks' are sugar with a rumour of creatine.
Flip the pack. Many ready-to-drink creatine products carry 1 to 2 grams, buried under 20 to 30 grams of sugar and a paragraph of things you cannot pronounce. Hyro Perform is a full 5g of creatine monohydrate plus 500mg sodium, 250mg potassium and 100mg magnesium, no added sugar, nothing artificial. The doses are printed on the stick. Hold it next to your tub and your Gatorade.

What creatine will not do. And what it will, by week four.
It is not a stimulant. You will not feel it on day one, and you might hold half a kilo of extra water in your muscles in the first fortnight, which is the tank filling, not fat. What it does is steadier and lasts: by week four stores are full, and most blokes notice they hold power deeper into a session, recover faster between them, and think clearer on the days they slept badly. One Perform stick in your first bottle of water, every morning. If it does nothing for you, the 30-day guarantee means you do not pay. Skip, pause, swap or cancel any time.
